2-PS1-1 Different kinds of matter exist and many of them can be either solid or liquid, depending on temperature. Matter can be described and classified by its observable properties.
The Woodland Parent Mentor Program is so much more than classroom volunteers! The Parent Mentors have weekly training, enrichment and outreach opportunities where they are able to meet new people and learn new skills that they can take back to use with students in the classroom. Last week they had a special guest join them for their "Beyond the Classroom" work. Gurnee Mayor Tom Hood spent time with our mentors to help build the school to community connection. We love to see these partnerships in action.

Group work in action!
The students in Mrs. Schumann’s class are creating community murals. Each community includes a neighborhood with "Fact Family Houses", and various buildings and other places typically found in a community.
Fun fact: In addition to things like schools and libraries, nearly every mural has an easily recognizable McDonald’s and Target. The students explained that even though some of them prefer other fast food places, McDonald’s is the easiest to draw.
Once the murals are complete, each group will name their community and then they will be displayed in the school.

The 1st Graders in Ms. Brooks class learned all about the life cycle of the plant. They also noticed some of the blending sounds they have been practicing - "SProut" "PLant" "FLower" and they were super excited to show each other all the extra details they added to their diagrams. Second graders learned about artist Paul Cezanne and how he used still life. They chose a portion of a fall still life that was created in the art room, then drew, outlined and painted their artwork using watercolors. They used multiple colors on each object in the style of Cezanne.

Students in Mrs. Balogh's first grade class worked together to identify how animals use their body parts to protect themselves. They discussed each animal and colored in the body part the animal uses for protection.
LS1.A All organisms have external parts. Different animals use their body parts in different ways to see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from place to place, and seek, find, and take in food, water and air. Plants also have different parts (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits) that help them survive and grow. (1-LS1-1)
Woodland Students and Staff have created beautiful ofrendas throughout the district in honor of Día de los Muertos. An ofrenda is an altar built to celebrate and remember loved ones who have passed away by displaying photos, favorite food and drinks, memorabilia, flowers and more. #LifeintheW
Día de los muertos is celebrated November 1st & November 2nd. To celebrate the Equity and Diversity Team & Dual Language teachers enlisted the school community's help to create ofrendas in both of our school libraries. They are beautiful!
The ofrenda is a central part of the Mexican holiday, Día de los Muertos,
where families create altars to honor and remember their deceased loved ones.
Observing and contributing to the ofrenda has been a great opportunity for our students to learn about Mexican culture and traditions.
Students in Mrs. Brooks's first grade class practiced their addition skills and their learning habits while participating in Workplaces. These young wildcats did a great job staying focused at their Workplaces!
