Dear Woodland Families,
Due to the winter weather impacting our area, all Woodland schools and offices will be closed on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024. This will be a traditional snow day/emergency closure; an eLearning Day will NOT be used. As a reminder, the district is also closed on Monday, Jan. 15 in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

We hope you are enjoying your winter break. The district office is open and we are here if you need us. Otherwise, please continue relaxing and recharging your batteries for a few more days.
We look forward to welcoming our teachers back on Jan. 8 for a Teacher Institute Day (no student attendance), and our students back on Jan. 9.

Could you find the Elf on the Shelf while Wiley was welcoming our students?

Student's in Mrs. Barton's class worked as a team to create a gingerbread train. Yum!
This helps students practice showing respect to their peers and being willing to listen to other's ideas. It is also great practice for fine motor planning!

1st grade art students used recycled materials (newspaper, scrap construction paper) along with paint, glue and a paper bag to create a gingerbread house. They discussed how a 3D sculpture is interesting from all sides and that many materials can be used to create an art project.
26.B.1d. Visual Arts: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create visual works of art using manipulation, eye-hand coordination, building and imagination

Ms. McGinn's Challenge Math Class: Gumdrop Tower Challenge!
15 minutes.
100 toothpicks.
1 box of Dots.
Build the tallest tower in 15 minutes. Students brainstormed together, created blueprints, and then began to build.

The Annual Holiday Food Drive was a HUGE success!
Thank you to everyone who volunteered, brought in non-perishable food, contributed with a financial donation, or supported the food drive in some other way over the past few weeks. With your generosity, we were able to support 82 Woodland families with extra food, warmth, and resources to help them through the holidays and winter break. There were multiple food drive competitions and fundraising events across the district, and the result was a pop-up food pantry for families to shop for their needs in a warm and welcoming environment. There are many different reasons why someone may need additional support this time of year, and you helped lift up your friends and neighbors with your contributions. Here are a few photos of our AMAZING volunteers, including student volunteers from both Woodland and Warren Township High School, setting up for the event. #LifeintheW

Advanced Math students taking a brain break and working together to solve challenging Pentomino Puzzles!

Second graders have been learning how to code in the Elementary Library. Students were asked to write a code and then program their Botley robot to get it from the start to the finish.

Elementary Shop with an Educator Event
Thank you to the Woodland Elementary and Transportation staff members who volunteered at the Shop with an Educator event on Wednesday evening. Many district families came to shop for the Annual Holiday Food Drive on the final night of collections. The students were so excited to pick out items that were needed from the Food Drive wish list. Thanks to your generosity, we will be able to stock Woodland's Pop-Up Food Pantry and provide extra support to district families over the winter break!

Reminder: Dec. 6, SIP Day - Early release for students
Primary - 10:40
Elementary - 10:50
Middle School - 11:35
Intermediate - 12:20

Thank you to our Woodland families for sharing your countries, cultures, talents, foods, and traditions with us at International Night! We were able to travel the world with a twirl around the Middle School cafeteria. Everyone belongs in #LifeintheW and this event helps us celebrate all of the wonderful people (and places) that makes our school district special.

Who will be out running errands tonight? Help us STUFF THE BUS!
Woodland School Buses will be out in front of the following grocery stores tonight if you want to make a donation to the Holiday Food Drive:
Target (Gurnee)
Jewel (Gurnee)
Walmart (Gurnee)
Butera (Grayslake)
They will be there between the hours of 4 - 7 p.m. If you are out shopping somewhere else, or you happen to miss one of our buses out on the town, we will happily take your donations tomorrow at the district office.
Thank you! #LifeintheW
