Introducing the Blue Envelope Program - supporting autism-friendly interactions with the Gurnee Police Department

The Gurnee Police Department is launching the Blue Envelope Program. This initiative is designed to enhance communication and promote safer and more positive interactions between police officers and individuals on the autism spectrum or with other communication needs.

This program provides a simple, clearly identifiable blue folder that individuals can present to a Gurnee police officer during any interaction, including traffic stops. The envelope enables participants to share essential information with the officer, including identification, vehicle registration, emergency contacts, and communication preferences. The purpose of this program is to improve safety, reduce anxiety, and prevent misunderstandings.

Participation in the Blue Envelope Program is voluntary and free. Anyone on the autism spectrum who lives, works, or spends time in Gurnee can pick up a Blue Envelope at a partnering location.
