           Looking at New Start Times

Woodland's Strategic Plan includes a a focus area of Student Well-Being. Within that focus is a goal of creating learning opportunities that address the physical, mental, emotional and social needs of the "whole child." One initiative toward achieving that goal is to identify current practices to address the "whole child" and research new educational  trends, such as school start times, to help advance those practices.

Sleep deprivation is a public health issue for adolescents putting them at risk of mental, emotional and physical stress. Research supports later start times especially for middle schools and high schools to improve mental health, sleep deprivation, safety, depression and academic achievement.
