Mr. Derek Straight
Mr. Straight represents the second generation in his family to select public education as a career and he has spent more than three decades in teaching.
Born and raised in Highland Park he attended Deerfield Elementary District 109 schools before graduating from Deerfield High School and receiving his bachelor's degree from Saint Mary's University in Winona, Minnesota where he lettered in both baseball and basketball for four years and three years respectively.
He began teaching third and fourth grade in Maryland and then moved to Lake Forest, Illinois where he taught most subjects in an 11-year span, ending his tenure there as an administrator. He moved on to Johnsburg, Illinois as a principal and central office administrator in charge of curriculum and instruction for the pre-kindergarten through 12th grade school district. He then worked at Barrington District 220 where he spent the last four years as a principal of a kindergarten through fifth grade school.
During that time, he also earned two master's degrees - one in curriculum and instruction and one in educational leadership, plus a few awards. He continues to be enthusiastic about participating in professional development opportunities locally and throughout the state of Illinois and he is excited about being part of Woodland District 50. Mr. Straight has commented that the environment and culture of Woodland Intermediate School is very positive and a place where children will thrive both emotionally and academically.
Mr. Straight in 2020 will celebrate 31 years of marriage to wife, Tammy, and together they have three amazing children: Christian (25), Shane (23) and Ruthie (16).
