School Board Meetings may seem very formal due to the laws and rules the School Board must follow. Meetings must be consistent with the requirements of the Illinois revised statutes 5 ILCS 120/2.02 (Open Meetings Act). The district must post notices for all meetings 48 hours in advance along with an agenda for the meeting. (See School Board Meetings: Agendas and Minutes.)
School Board Meetings are always held at the Woodland Education Support Center at 1105 North Hunt Club Road in Gurnee, unless an exception is posted.
Agendas are generally posted 48 hours prior to the meetings. A synopsis of the meeting will be posted one week after the meeting. Minutes will be posted within two weeks after the meeting.
There are several different types of meetings:
Governing Board Meetings
These meetings are usually held on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Governing Board Meetings are open to all interested individuals. There is a time set aside for “Citizen’s Statements” at every open meeting. Anyone is welcome to speak for two minutes. Please don’t expect an immediate response, however. School Board Meetings are not intended for public discussions. The Board cannot respond to an issue until the issue is discussed by the Board. Generally, you will receive a written response within two weeks or less.
Special Board Meetings
Special Board Meetings are held on an as needed basis.
Closed Board Meetings
Closed Board Meetings are held whenever necessary and usually before most regular Board meetings. These meetings are used to discuss student discipline, employee matters, land purchases, potential or ongoing litigation and negotiations. Closed meetings are not open to the public by law.
Public Forums
Public forums are held throughout the year to provide information and to hear what the public has to say. Forums are the time to ask questions, engage in dialogue, and learn what’s happening in the district.
