5 Things You Should Know About District 50

November, 2008

Dear Woodland Parents and Families,

American Education Week: The month of November allows us to recognize all staff during National Staff Appreciation Week, November 16-22. During this week, please take a moment to recognize all staff members who have impacted your child’s life: custodians, nurses, social workers, teachers, and administrators. It truly takes a team of people to support the children we educate every day at Woodland!  We are quite fortunate to have a dedicated, caring group of professionals working to help your child each day.

State of Illinois School Report Cards: On October 31, results of our Illinois Standards Achievement Tests were made public. Click here to view the document.

Some key points to note:

  • Our middle school achieved Adequate Yearly Progress.
  • This was the first year that our English Language Learners (ELL) took the ISAT, which impacted our scores. In years past, students not proficient in English
took the Illinois Measure of Annual Growth in English (IMAGE) test.
  • Our student achievement continues to climb each year students are at Woodland.
  • Our math scores continue to be strong across all grade levels.
  • Some of our initiatives for this school year include focusing on the Language Arts implementation and working closely with our ELL students to support them with their English language acquisition.

District Bookfair at Barnes and Noble, Hawthorn Mall: An exciting celebration is right around the corner at Barnes and Noble on Friday, November 14th.  Come join in on the fun and get a head start on your holiday shopping and support our children.  Attached is a voucher for you to download and bring to the event. The voucher allows the PTA and our schools to receive a percentage of your purchase. Click here for voucher.

There will be a moms and tots story time from 10 am until 11 a.m.  Author Monk Ashland will be available to sign his new book "Sky Village" at 7:30 p.m.

Many guest readers will be at the event including school principals and assistant principals and our librarians from both Elementary East and Elementary West.  See the attached flyer for specific times.  A visit from the Wildcat mascot and performances from the Intermediate School Drama group are also some highlights.

We are in need of volunteers to help gift wrap from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.  One-hour slots are available during these times.  If you are available, please e-mail Jennifer at jennifer_a_bond@yahoo.com.

Thank you for helping support YOUR Woodland PTA!  We can't wait to see you at Barnes and Noble on November 14!

Emergency Closings Information: With the winter months quickly approaching, it’s time to review school closing announcement procedures. Please remember that information about school closing will be made via telephone, district website, on local news and radio.  It is important that all phone numbers are updated and accurate.  If your phone number has changed, please send updated numbers to your child’s school.

Further information on school closings will be sent home with your child at the end of the month.  As always, copies of district notes home can be found under the “Parents” section of the District 50 website. Please post it on your refrigerator and save it for a snowy day.

Annual School Calendar: Each year, a committee made up of parents, staff and community members have the opportunity to provide input as we set our school calendar for the upcoming year. Your feedback is critical as we anticipate events for the 2009-2010 school year. Though our meetings have not been set, I anticipate meeting two times this year in either late February 2009 or early March 2009. Should you have an interest in participating in the Superintendent’s Calendar Committee please contact my office at 847-596-5601.

Sincerely,
Joy A. Swoboda, Ed.D.
